Avarcas Menorquinas

Durante una foto publicada en instagram hace par de días se creó una cierta “mesa redonda virtual”  donde muchas chicas comentaron sobre unas sandalias que llevaba puesta. Así fue como se levantó mi curiosidad sobre este tipo de zapatos; Las Avarcas Menorquinas. Les cuento que después de eso empecé a indagar sobre el tema, pues por lo que me habían dicho este tipo zapato no eran tan nuevo que digamos.

Las Avacas, (o Abarcas, ambas formas son correctas) nacen en el isla de Menorca, España. Estas sandalias son totalmente artesanales y eran usadas por los trabajadores  y campesinos a principio del siglo XX.  Las sandalias están hechas de cuero y goma lo cual permite que sean fuertes, flexibles y cómodas. Una de la marcas mas reconocidas desde el 1945 son las Avarcas Pons, sin embargo actualmente muchas otras marcas de moda ha tomado este tipo de zapato como inspiración permitiendo así que las avarcas sean parte de la moda actual.

I posted a photo on instagram that started a really nice discussion about a pair of sandals I was wearing. I was so curious about what they were saying, that I started to dig in to learn more about this type of shoe; the Avarcas Menorquinas. There are not a “new trend” as I though!

The Avarcas (or Abarcas, both ways are well written) were born in the island of Minorca, Spain. These sandals are handcrafted and first worn by countrymen and farmers in the 20th Century. The sandals are made with leather and rubber to be strong, flexible and comfortable. One of the most well-know brand founded in 1945 is Avarcas Pons, however nowadays many other fashion brands have been inspired by this type of shoe which make them now part of the fashion world.
