I Made Peace With My Curls & Learned How To Keep Healthy Hair
I grew in a society where having curly hair is “bad” and going to the salon is almost a ritual. Many ask me about my hair and a few days ago I posted a picture on my social media accounts where I confessed I spent months without stepping on the salon. Today I want to tell my story of how I made peace with my natural hair:
I lived outside the country for more than 3 years. The first months were the hardest. Weekly I learned to dry my hair with the hair dryer until, however between classes and cares of the day to day, I didn’t have enough time. Due to, I started using my natural hair and little by little I habituated. Back in Europe wavy or curly hair is not frowned upon, on the contrary, it is something exotic that sets you apart from others. Consequently, I looked for tricks and learned to make different hairstyles by myself to handle my curls and keep healthy hair.
I returned to the country, and obviously started going to the salon again, but no longer felt that emotional or social pressure. Soon after I joined the gym to reduce 20 pounds that Italy so kindly gave me, I decided to train at least 3 days a week. This led me to stop going to the salon so frequently. I learned to make peace with my natural hair, I understand what works and what doesn’t, to use accessories on my hair and make myself different hairstyles for a change. Most of all, I began to use natural treatments every so often to maintain healthy hair.

Today I confess that I go to the salon just for a haircut or some special occasion. Therefore, months can pass by without applying direct heat from the hair dryer, which has helped me maintain healthy hair. Please note, natural hair also it needs different care techniques to make it look healthy and shiny, (probably even more!).
Here I share my tips that I have used in recent months:
- I curl my hair without applying heat. Rather I use this AMAZING technique (you can see tutorial HERE)
- In addiction, I apply lots of natural oils (olive, coconut, or almonds) at least once a month. You can apply it hours before washing your hair or the night before.
- Moroccanoil Argan oil has helped me so much with dry or wet hair to restore the strands.
- Do not dye. I like the natural color of my hair, hence the absence of dye and chemicals helps me to keep healthy hair. Yes, I know! Ombre, highlights, and balange look so cool. However, keep in mind that you need to take double care to keep a healthy hair.
As you can see, I have detoxed my hair from the salon. And I do not want you to think that I speak disparagingly of beauty salons. I still go, mainly to give maintenance and special treatments, but it is advisable to give the hair a break. In this blogpost, I just went to the salon and look how healthy it looks. Furthermore, since I learned to love and take care of my hair as it is, I stopped being envious and I felt a release of not relying on a hair dryer. That has been the greatest satisfaction!
