DIY / A Beach Hat Inspired by ‘Do Not Disturb Hat’
I’d wanted to do this DIY for a while and now I can finally share it with you. Since I saw this “Do Not Disturb hat” by designer Eugenia Kim, I felt in love. But when I learned about the retail price I was so disappointed; US$400 for a hat, it’s a luxury I can’t afford right now. However, I decided to try to do the ‘Do Not Disturb Hat’ myself. Sure, I must give all the credits to the designer, the idea is amazing so I took it as inspiration to create one.
In collaboration with Pal’Mar, a Dominican brand that works with artisans of the island and designers to create beach accessories (you can read more about them here), I put my DIY project into practice. I decided to change the sentence for something that defines us: “beach bum”. The term is apply to “a person who likes to spend her free time on the beach” … very appropriate for someone living in the Caribbean, right?
Ok, let’s do this!
You will need:
- A hat (available on Pal’Mar)
- Sequins (I used 4-yard)
- Glue (I used the E6000 but you can use liquid silicone too)
- Whiteboard marker
- Liquid cleaner for whiteboard markers
- Scissors
- Needle and thread (* not shown in photo)
- ½ yard of ribbon of 1.5 or 2 “inch wide
Steps to follow:
- Place the ribbon around the hat, and cut the excess.
- Use E6000 to stick the ribbon to the hat.
- Take the marker and write the phrase or word you want in cursive, as it gives a better effect (you can use cool phrases like “out of office”, “sunbathing”, “Vacation Mode”, etc .. be creative!)
- Carefully, take the tip of the sequins and begins to cover the word you wrote. Note: this takes time, do your best!
- When you’ve finished gluing the sequins, take the needle and thread and make a few stitches around the phrase. This is to ensure the sequins from falling apart.
- Use the liquid cleaner with a cotton to remove any mark of the marker on the hat.
… And that’s it, you are done! Did someone say ‘pool party’? I promise you’ll be queen of the party. Have fun!
