What is A "Preppy Style" & How You Can Pull It Off

“Pretty and witty are a perfect couple”-Kate Spade (preppy style icon)

The “preppy style” was born in the private universities (Ivy Leagues) of the United States and it was inspired by the way students dressed for school. The “preppy style” became famous in the 60’s and it was always related to outdoors sports like lacrosse, golf or polo. One of the typical elements of this style are the nautical stripes, mostly mixed with polo-shirts and chinos pants. When I think of “preppy” these brands come to my mind: Tommy Hilfiger, JCrew and Kate Spade. They keep it alive and modern season after season. And if you need a better reference, think of Blair Waldorf, unquestionably she was the true queen of “preppy style” with a modern touch.

For this outfit, I took a striped dress as a base and worked the concept of layers. To achive a more contemporary look, I wore a shirt with a mint collar neck. I thought it was a fun touch. In theory, this dress is very tight to the body, so it was easy for me to put a circular skirt over it. This is a good trick to turn a dress in something different. Now, the total look gives the optical effect that I have two pieces; a blouse + a skirt … have you tried this?
