Stunning Bags Made in Haiti
I’ve been wanting to share this brand with you that has really captivated me in so many levels. They are stunning bags made in Haiti with calabash fruit (a fruit that looks like coconut). This is one of the first cultivated plants in the world and it’s used as a container for holding food and water.
But how the idea of turning a fruit into a fashion accessory began? Lucie Cincinatis is the creator of this beautiful project, Jacmel & Co, which has only one year on the market. This Belgian girl decided to quit her well paid job on Wall Street in New York and moved to Haiti to teach English. While she was there, she met the small town of Jacmel, located on the southern coast of Haiti. She felt in love with the manual work done by local craftsmen, and saw an opportunity to expand their talent and present it to the world, transforming this fruit into a bag designed and sewn entirely by hand.
Lucie believes that Haiti is too rich to be poor, and her mission is to promote the beauty of this country, create jobs for the population and make a difference in the world…Amazing, right? I wrote an email to the designer, who was so kind and polite to me. I told her how much I loved the project and congratulated her for such a beautiful initiative.
Now I’m dying to visit the city of Jacmel in person, because on the brand’s Instagram account there are tons of wonderful photos to get inspired.. Also, I’m trying to decide which one all the models I want to get, because they are truly unique with a very special value. If you want to join the project, you can get yours through Jacmel & Co’s e-shop or by contacting Lucie directly.
