In the past few years I’ve learn to keep my mind working constantly to achieve creativity. It’s part of my profession so it’s an essential activity all day long. However, being creative in this kind of world can be exhausting and somedays creativity doesn’t flow. What should I do? The show must go on and I need to work, so I’ve develop some technique to boots creativity the right way.

5 Ways To Boost Creativity What do you do to boost creativity consistently? I might not be a easy task, however these tips are the key to achieve great things.

1. ORGANIZATION

There is no worse feeling than sitting down to work and finding a catastrophic mess. I try to keep my work area organized, when I feel that I’ve accumulated a big amount of papers, I can’t find a pen and things start falling off the table, I panic. It is impossible to concentrate in this way. I know being creative sometimes means “to be a little bit messy”, but this can not last there forever. If I want to boost creativity, I finish a project, and then I organize. Before leaving the office, I try to leave my desk clean. So, I’ll be ready to start the next project with a clear area.

2. BRAINSTORMING

A great idea to boost creativity is to write down EVERYTHING! Currently I have like 5 notebooks scattered everywhere; office, home, wallet, car. Here I write whatever comes to mind. You don’t know the amount of ideas that come to me when I’m in traffic, in line at the bank or lying in bed. If I let them go, I start to do something else and …puff! Idea forgotten. It has happened a thousand times, so that’s why I write everything that comes to my mind immediately. So when it’s time to work, I have part of my brainstorm ready.

3. RESEARCH

We must stop thinking that we know everything and learn how to do a good research. All creative people must be aware of what is happening around them. I read books, watch movies, listen to songs, do research on similar works done previously, I try to explore my knowledge to the fullest. A tip: it’s better to look up into things not related to the topic area per se. It gives me another perspective and don’t let me fall in plagiarism or cliché.

4. GO OUT & BREATH

Sometimes we try all the previous steps, the we sit in front of the computer or notebook and nothing comes. Do not panic, this is normal. We’ve focused so much on what we have to do and nothing flows. One thing I do to boost creativity when this happens, is to leave the house or office, I take a walk. I do any activity not related to work or talk to people that has nothing to do with the subject. You can take a day off, a weekend out or just 10-15 mins for coffee. The point is that your brain needs to be relax to create any new content. (FYI, not too much! you might get used to laziness)

5. BE BRAVE

Wow, I think this is the most difficult of all. People say to be creative takes courage, and it is true. To expose your ideas to the public and critical eye, it is terrified. We all want to succeed, we want people to like our projects, we want the client to approve our ideas, we want others to say good things about us. But there’s always that little voice that says “what if it doesn’t happen as we planned?” if I say that it never happens to me, it would be a lie. It happens all the time and that’s ok. Begin afraid means that I’m trying your best and I’m putting yourself out there, however this can’t let me give up or not try at all. When that little voice comes to mind, I respond “if it doesn’t work, I’ll learn from it and try again.”

Me encantaron tus puntos, yo escucho música, leo algún libro, estudio algún tema fuera de lo que hago (diseño), trato de visitar museos, ver obras de teatro, o ver videos de otros diseñadores.
