DIY / How To Make A Painted Monogram Mug
I’m a big fan of personalized gifts. I feel customization brings a more special and unique touch to any gift, don’t you think? I had seen these monograms mugs from Anthropologie, they are super chic! I thought it was a very cool idea to do it myself.
In collaboration with Encajes La Rosario (a dominican craft store), I made this super easy tutorial. You can do it and give it as a gift for Valentines’s Day or birthday to anyone special, better yet it very inexpensive.
Ok, so let’s do it …
Materials:
- Masking tape
- A mug
- The letter you want printed in adhesive paper (I used this font, but you can use more linear typography is you are not good cutting out. I recommend Arial or Helvetica)
- Newspaper
- Gold spay paint
- Clear spray paint
- X-Acto and Scissors
Instructions:
- Cut out the letter. Using the X-acto, make an opening on the borders of the font and finish up with the scissors.
- You will ended with a paper stencil template of your font as showed in the picture.
- Decide where you want to paste the stencil on the mug
- Carefully, paste the adhesive stencil template on the mug. Don’t leave any hole or spaces.
- Cover the part of the mug that you don’t want to spray paint. I left the handle without covering and put some pieces of newspaper inside the mug.
- Spray the gold paint. Leave a distance between the paint and the object, if you apply it too close, it can get really messy. Spray in short spurts to achieve even coverage and avoid dripping. Let it dry for 5-10 mins and then re-apply to cover everything. Remove the adesive paper and tape, don’t let the paint to dry complete.
- Apply the clear spray and let it dry for a couples of hours… and done!
TIP: Use a gold Sharpie marker to retouch any damage on the borders. Not dishwasher safe. Wash the inside by hand and lightly rinse the outside.
You can put flowers or chocolates inside the mug and give it to a special one. Did you like it? Share your projects with me using #thekeyitemDIY and tag me @thekeyitem on social media. So, who wants to give it a try?
