Hi, The Key Item Followers! I’m Nathalia’s cousin, Cynthia.  Nati gave me the opportunity to be a guest blogger to learn a little about the world of blogging – who knows, maybe one day I’ll follow in her footsteps.  Here’s my first post (emoji) on a few books I loved, hope you enjoy!

Books expand your mind; they open you to new ideas and points of view.  This year I started listening to audiobooks on Audible, I know listening to a book is not the same as reading a book, but through Audible I was able to complete my personal goal of “reading” more.

After finishing a book, I like to take notes of what I loved about the book or an idea I’d like to incorporate into my daily life.  Below I share 3 inspirational books I really loved; I hope they inspire you as they inspired me.

“DARING GREATLY” by Brene Brown

This book by Brene Brown talks about shame, authenticity, and the power of vulnerability.  Brown explains how we often put on an armor to protect ourselves from feeling vulnerable. However, the author emphasizes the importance of taking off the armor, getting in the arena, and having the courage to show up –  to be vulnerable.

After reading the book, I had the opportunity to see Brene Brown at Brit + Co’s Re:Make conference and I was definitely obsessed.  A few things that really stood out during her talk are:

  1. Making something and sharing it with the world, is sharing a piece of you, and that makes us feel vulnerable.  It is that vulnerability that contributes to your work and makes it yours.
  2. Take a 1 inch x 1 inch sheet of paper and write down the names of people whose opinions truly matter to you.  Other’s opinions? Forget them!
  3. Last, if you’re not in the arena without an arena, here with me, “I don’t want to hear it!” – It’s normal to be scared, but have the courage to confront your fears.

“EXCUSE ME YOUR LIFE IS WAITING” by Lynn Grabhorn

There are myriads of books that talk about the importance of visualizing and positive thinking, however, this book focuses on your feelings.  When starting a new project, how do you feel? Good or bad? This book talks about the importance of connecting our feelings with our desires.  For example, if we want to start a new business and when we think about it, we feel anxious and scared, we are creating negative energy.

Instead, we need to focus on how this new project will make us feel fulfilled, product and abundant. That way, we are creating positive feelings towards our project.

In short, pay attention to how you feel when you think about your goals and make sure that your projects make you feel good, no matter how difficult things may seem in the moment.

“AMERICANAH” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Is a novel that tells the story of a Nigerian girl who after living in the United States for several years, decides to close her blog and return to Nigeria.  The book follows the main character’s life, experiences, and observations about Nigerian and American culture.

This book is interesting as it discussed hot-button topics like race, differences between African Americans born in the United States versus Africans who live in the United States, and hair. I don’t want to tell you too much and ruin an amazing read, but what one of my favorites things about this book is how it’s written. It reminds us that there every life experience teaching us something, that life takes a lot of turns, and last that if something is for you, it’s for you, and things will unfold at the right time.

Americanah is a great read as it makes you think about society, but it’s also a fun read as the main character is extremely likable and as she goes through her journey, it makes you think about your own life.

Every book teaches you something.  Whether it’s a new way of achieving your goals or a reminding you of something you once learned but forgot.  What have been some of your favorites inspirational books? Are there books that have helped you meet your goals? Share them with us!
